Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process that uses chemical enhanced water to force natural gas out of the ground. Natural gas is a very efficient resource, commonly used for heating, as it releases less carbon dioxide than oil or coal. The inefficient thing about the fracking industry is the extraction of the natural gas. In 2005, the Bush administration decided to cut hydraulic fracturing pollution restraints. As a result, fracking companies can basically inject highly toxic chemicals into the ground, without anyone knowing what they are. Also, these companies can dump their waste in streams, bring their waste to poor water treatment plants, let the vapor forms of chemicals seep from tanks into the atmosphere, etc. Yet, if a regular people other than fracking industries dumped their waste into rivers, they would get sued or arrested. |
